Environment variables

• TZ: Timezone assigned to the container (default UTC)
• CONFIG_FILE: YAML configuration path (default /data/config.yml)
• SAMBA_WORKGROUP: NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name. (default WORKGROUP)
• SAMBA_SERVER_STRING: Server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field. (default Docker Samba Server)
• SAMBA_LOG_LEVEL: Log level. (default 0)
• SAMBA_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS: Allow to follow symlinks. (default yes)
• SAMBA_WIDE_LINKS: Controls whether or not links in the UNIX file system may be followed by the server. (default yes)
• SAMBA_HOSTS_ALLOW: Set of hosts which are permitted to access a service. (default 127.0.0.0/8 10.0.0.0/8 172.16.0.0/12 192.168.0.0/16)
• SAMBA_INTERFACES: Allows you to override the default network interfaces list.
• AVAHI_ENABLE: Enable service discovery for Linux and macOS (default 0)
• AVAHI_INTERFACES: Comma-separated network interfaces Avahi is allowed to use
• AVAHI_NAME: Service instance name advertised through Avahi (default %h for the Avahi hostname)
• AVAHI_HOSTNAME: Avahi hostname without the .local suffix (default to the container hostname)
• AVAHI_MODEL: Finder device model advertised through Avahi (default RackMac)
• AVAHI_ADISK_NAME: Time Machine share name advertised through _adisk._tcp (disabled by default)
• WSDD2_ENABLE: Enable service discovery for Windows (default 0)
• WSDD2_HOSTNAME: Override hostname (default to host or container name)

Configuration

Before using this image you have to create the YAML configuration file /data/config.yml to be able to create users, provide global options and add shares. Here is an example:

veto

veto: no is a list of predefined files and directories that will not be visible or accessible:

hidefiles

hidefiles: /_*/ is a list of predefined files and directories that will not be visible, but are accessible:

/_*/

In this example, all files and directories beginning with an underscore (_) will be hidden.

recycle

recycle: yes enables the vfs_recycle module. Any other value, including no, leaves recycle disabled.

The vfs_recycle intercepts file deletion requests and moves the affected files to a temporary repository rather than deleting them immediately. This gives the same effect as the Recycle Bin on Windows computers. On this image it is stacked with the default fruit and streams_xattr VFS modules so macOS shares keep a consistent VFS configuration.

options

options is a list of raw Samba share parameters appended to the generated share section. Use it for share-specific settings that are not modeled as first-class YAML keys:

These options are written after the generated share settings, so they can also override generated defaults when needed.

Usage

Docker Compose

Docker compose is the recommended way to run this image. Copy the content of folder examples/compose in /var/samba/ on your host for example. Edit the compose and configuration files with your preferences and run the following commands:

docker compose logs -f

Command line

You can also use the following minimal command:

Notes

Variable interpolation

Values in a YAML file can be set by variables, and interpolated at runtime using a Bash-like syntax ${VARIABLE}.

Default values can be defined inline using typical shell syntax ${VARIABLE-default}. It evaluates to default only if VARIABLE is unset in the environment.

Here is an example:

Service discovery for Linux and macOS

Zeroconf service discovery for Linux and macOS clients can be enabled by setting AVAHI_ENABLE to 1. It publishes the _smb._tcp service on port 445 and a _device-info._tcp record for Finder using Avahi.

If you use Samba as a Time Machine target, set AVAHI_ADISK_NAME to the matching share name to publish an _adisk._tcp record. No _adisk._tcp record is published by default because advertising a non-existent Time Machine share breaks client expectations.

mDNS uses multicast UDP port 5353, so the container must use host networking on a Linux host. Docker Desktop host networking on macOS and Windows does not provide LAN-visible multicast discovery for this use case.

The advertised service name follows the Avahi hostname by default. Set AVAHI_NAME to control the name shown by service browsers such as Finder without changing the host address record.

Set AVAHI_HOSTNAME to control the .local host name used by Avahi. Do not include the .local suffix. This changes the host address record, so prefer AVAHI_NAME when you only need a friendlier service name. If another mDNS stack is already running on the host network, competing host address records can cause Avahi host name conflicts.

Avahi listens on every interface by default. Set AVAHI_INTERFACES, for example eth0, to avoid advertising on Docker bridge, loopback, or veth interfaces.

Service discovery for Windows

Service discovery for Windows can be enabled by setting WSDD2_ENABLE to 1.

You also need to set the following capabilities to the container:

• CAP_NET_ADMIN
• CAP_NET_RAW

Name will be the hostname of the host if network mode is host or one of the container. If you want to override this value, you can set hostname in your compose file or set WSDD2_HOSTNAME env var.

NetBIOS name will be the hostname of the host. If you want to override this value, you can set WSDD2_NETBIOS_NAME env var.
