65816disasm is a disassembler for WDC 65816 code. It tries to analyze code flow, much like IDA does. It uses a little language to control how the disassembler works. Right now it only has support for LowROM and HighROM SNES ROMs, but that can easily be changed in the future (see memmap.go). It is far from perfect, but good enough for code analysis.

Usage: 65816disasm [options] ROMfile memmap if you do not specify the correct command line, you will get the full help (including valid values of memmap).

The language is read from standard input. Diagnostic messages are printed on standard error. The final disassembly is printed on standard output.

The options are: -isolatesubs If, during analysis, the disassembly gives up in lots of places due to not knowing how big index register immediate operations are (it can't know for sure what the value of the x flag is), try this option. -showall Show all bytes in the ouptut disassembly, including bytes that were not disassembled. This will significantly increase the size of the disassembly (think on the order of hundreds of megabytes); beware! Each data byte line will have a comment that shows what the word and (24-bit) long at that address is as well as the ASCII character of that byte (if printable); this presently does not properly handle crossing banks.

The language is simple: each line of the input is split around Unicode whitespace into tokens. Any token that begins with a # is a comment; comments stretch to the end of a line. The script ends at end of file, at which point the disassembler will spit out the result. Right now it only spits out actual instructions and special subroutine data, not printing any other data bytes. The currently supported language commands are help show a quick summary of commands doauto do auto-analysis on the ROM vectors specialsub addr command [args] mark a subroutine as doing something special with the instruction stream addr must be a bare (not prefixed) hex number; this will change soon I hope commands are: stringafter n the given subroutine takes n bytes from the instruction stream, then a null-terminated string; example: after specialsub 12345 stringafter 2, you see jsr sub_12345 dc.b 3 dc.b 6 dc.b "hello", 0 Other commands will be added in time. dowordptr addr envaddr Makes the word at addr a pointer to code whose environment (and thus pbr) come from the environment at envaddr. Presently, the environment is only saved this way at indirect jump instructions (jmp (hhll), jmp (hhll,x), jmp [hhllmm], and jsr (hhll,x)).

The format of output lines is instruction operand ; ROM address of instruction | logical address of operands, or other info about the operands There can be multiple of the above, separated by pipes. If you see a (!) in this field, then something went wrong; see the message. See the WeaponLord US disassembly script for examples.

65816disasm tries not to make a mistake. For example, because WDC encoded the size of immediate addressing mode opcodes in the status register p, the disassembler will give up if the respective bits of p become indeterminate. 65816disasm tries to follow the stack and the value of the a register properly as well, but static analysis like this can only go so far, and there may very well still be bugs. Feel free to suggest improvements.

So far I have only tested this on: - the Japanese version of Thunder Spirits; a basic disassembly script for the game with instructions is included - Columns (though so far only to make sure HighROM works; will do an analysis later) - Jaki Crush (I was curious; with it I found a bug in LowROM handling) - WeaponLord; language was expanded to help search for specific code and an example script for the US version is included - Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (seems to jump to a bad address via pea/rts...?)

This package is go get-table, and does not rely on any external libraries.

The program is released under the terms of the GPLv3 for now. I may make the license more relaxed in the future.
