jnb-ping - Java Non-Blocking ICMP Ping

A non-blocking ICMP library for Java, using the Java Foreign Function & Memory (FFM) API to access native APIs, supporting thousands of simultaneous ICMP ping targets. Written in Kotlin, but compatible with Java (or any JVM-hosted language).

Currently, only Linux and MacOS X are supported.

Version 3.x supports Java 11+, version 4.x requires Java 21+, and starting with 5.x the library requires Java 25+ (it is built on the FFM API instead of JNA/JNR).

Because the library performs native calls via the FFM API, run your application with --enable-native-access=ALL-UNNAMED (or grant native access to the module reading this library) to silence the JVM's restricted-native-access warning.

Building

Requires Bazel 8.7.x and JDK 25+.

Tests require ICMP socket permissions. On Linux, set sysctl net.ipv4.ping_group_range (and net.ipv6.ping_group_range for IPv6). macOS works without a special config. Some tests ping external hosts so network access is required.

Linux Kernel Support

The minimum supported Linux kernel version is v4.19.10. It may work with older kernels (some reported working on v3.13.), depending on the kernel configuration parameters, but only v4.19.10+ has been tested. I am fairly certain that IPv6 is not supported (by this library) on any Linux kernel version less than v4.19.
